Kata Sincia berasal dari bunyi dialek Hokkian / Fujian Hua (Hanzi: 福建话, Pinyin: Fújiàn huà).
Sincia terdiri dari dua kata, Sin dan Cia.
Sin, dalam bahasa Tionghoa adalah xin (Hanzi: 新, Pinyin: Xīn) berarti baru.
Sedangankan Cia, dalam bahasa Tionghoa adalah zheng (Hanzi: 正, Pinyin: Zhēng) berarti bulan pertama tahun Imlek.
Istilah sincia atau xin zheng dalam bahasa Tionghoa (Hanzi: 新正, Pinyin: Xīn zhēng) merupakan singkatan dari istilah xin zheng yue (Hanzi: 新正月, Pinyin: Xīn zhēngyuè) yang artinya bulan pertama yang baru di tahun Imlek.
Dalam dialek Hokkian, istilah xin zheng yue dibaca sebagai sin cia gwe.
Beberapa orang Tionghoa memudahkan pelafalannya menjadi sincia.
Kemudian terjadi pergeseran penyebutan kata Sincia menjadi Imlek yang memiliki arti hampir sama dengan Sincia.
Sehingga sekarang kita lebih mengenal sebagai Hari Perayaan Tahun Baru Imlek bagi orang Tionghoa.
